One year in: What we’ve learned & what’s to come
We purchased Treetop Acres last October and are officially celebrating one full year as Christmas tree growers.
After 12 full months of tending to the fields, meeting your families, and learning the rhythm of the farm, we can say one thing for sure: We’re more excited than ever for “season two.”
Here’s a brief recap of what we’ve learned in year one:
1. Christmas tree farming is equal parts science and magic.
We knew there would be planting, shearing, and soil testing — but nothing could’ve prepared us for the magic of watching the cars pulling in and seeing families wandering the rows, picking the tree, and turning a simple moment into a memory. It’s something both Pat and I have enjoyed doing with our families every holiday season for our entire lives, and to be able to create and host that experience for other families is truly a gift. It’s also a great reminder that every branch and tree we care for matters.
2. Weather keeps you humble.
From a super rainy spring to a seriously dry summer (and actual drought), Mother Nature taught us to stay flexible and grateful. We learned when to let her lead and when a little extra elbow grease (to the tune of very manual irrigation) could make all the difference.
We’ve also learned to look at the forecast very differently. It’s funny, we never thought we’d be elated to see that it’d be rainy for days — but when our trees need it, it’s all of a sudden a blessing rather than a curse.
3. Community is everything.
Neighbors stopped by to introduce themselves. Families shared stories about coming here for years. Folks offered advice, encouragement, and sometimes even tools or equipment. People showed up for our experimental yoga events in the summer and fall.
We have so many incredible family members and friends who have stopped by, lent a hand, and supported us from afar. And we’ve been honored to collaborate and partner with so many amazing small local businesses.
We’ve also been blown away by the warm welcome we’ve received from the other tree farmers we’ve met. Getting involved with the Western New York Christmas Tree Farmers Association and the Christmas Tree Farmers of NY groups was one of the smartest decisions we made. These other farmers’ kindness and willingness to share their knowledge are beyond generous. We can’t wait to give back.
All of this helped us realize pretty quickly that a farm isn’t just land — it’s people. And we’re so grateful to be part of this community.
4. There’s always more to do and more to learn.
From equipment quirks to pest management to perfecting the art of trimming a tree just right, every month had its lessons. And thanks to our industry friends and lots of trial and error, we’re stepping into this season so much stronger and quite a bit wiser.
We’ve also learned just how much work is involved in running a farm — and if we’re being honest, it’s a lot of work. We still love it, for sure — but I think we’re both looking forward to becoming more proficient and more efficient in year two.
What’s next
This past year has been all about taking what we’ve learned and pouring it back into the farm. Here’s what you can expect from us this upcoming season.
More trees and taller trees: After selling out in one weekend last year, we planted 2,600 trees to start the process of filling in our fields for years to come. We’re also bringing in hundreds of pre-cut trees this year to make sure we have more options (and more stock) for you to choose from. That includes several taller trees, for our friends who have very high ceilings and want something bigger than what we have in the ground.
More wreaths and retail: Last year was the first time I’d ever made a wreath — but after making and decorating 50 of them last year and attending some amazing workshops taught by amazing wreath-makers who have been doing it for decades, I’m confident I’ll be able to step up our production and enhance the quality this year. We’re even going to take pre-orders, so stay tuned for more details there.
A warmer experience: We’ll be adding more fun photo ops, more visits from Santa, dog-friendly (and dog-focused) events, a cozy firepit, cookies, and a more reliable coffee and cocoa vendor this year to make your trip to Treetop Acres as enjoyable and as memorable as possible.
Most importantly, we’re entering this season with a full year’s worth of experience under our belts — and that feels like a pretty big milestone.
Thank You for Being Part of Our Story
Whether last season was your first time visiting or you’ve been coming here for years, your support has meant everything to us. We can’t wait to welcome you back, help you find the perfect tree, and continue building traditions together.
Here’s to year two—more memories, more growth, and more magic among the evergreens.
See you the day after Thanksgiving!
